Holman injury casts doubt on Australia role

Brett Holman is in danger of missing Australia s next two World Cup qualifiers after picking up a groin injury playing for AZ Alkmaar.

Holman strained his groin during Saturday s 2-2 draw with Ajax and was substituted early in the second half.

The 27-year-old was ruled out of AZ’s Europa League clash with Austria Vienna on Thursday, and according to the club s official website, an MRI scan has revealed that the former NEC Nijmegen player will be out of action for several weeks.

This would cast doubt over his ability to be ready in time for Australia s trip to Oman on November 11 or their visit to Thailand on November 15.

The attacking midfielder has been a key figure for the Socceroos in their early qualifying matches, and depending on other results, a win for Holger Osieck s side in Oman could seal their progression into the fourth round of AFC World Cup qualifying after just four matches.

Holman joined AZ from NEC in the summer of 2008 and has been a key player for the current Eredivisie leaders this season, scoring the winner in his side s 2-1 victory over his former club Feyenoord.

He also opened the scoring against Ajax at the weekend and set up Roy Beerens for the second goal before getting injured.
